Horizontal Cedar Fence — Prairie Village, KS
Horizontal cedar in Prairie Village
We installed approximately 130 linear feet of 6-foot horizontal cedar slat privacy fence in late winter, when ground conditions were favorable for post setting. Select-grade 1x4 cedar boards run horizontally with 1/4-inch spacing between boards for a slight airflow gap. Green pressure-treated 4x4 posts at 8-foot centers with three horizontal cleats per section to support the horizontal boards at mid-span.
A late-winter fence install in Prairie Village — the horizontal cedar slat style was selected by the homeowner to modernize a property that had been on the market with an aging board-on-board fence. Prairie Village's original housing stock is largely 1960s-70s construction, and modernizing fence styles is part of renovation projects that increase appeal in the real estate market.
Winter installs in Prairie Village
February in Prairie Village is actually a workable window for fence installation — the ground hasn't fully frozen in the upper 18 inches, and the concrete sets appropriately if temperatures stay above 32°F during the cure window. We monitor the forecast before committing to a winter pour. Our wood privacy fence installation work continues year-round in Johnson County except during frozen-ground events.
Modern look ready for staining in spring
The horizontal cedar immediately changed the character of the property. The homeowner is staging the house and the updated fence was noted by their realtor. First stain coat is recommended in 30-45 days when the new cedar has dried to stain-ready moisture content. The gray-toned semi-transparent fence stain choice they selected will complement the home's exterior perfectly.
