We treated the full elevated deck — deck surface, stair treads, risers, railings, and the post system below. Access to the underside of the stringers required extension work. Two coats of amber semi-transparent penetrating stain were applied throughout, with extra attention to the stair tread nosings where foot traffic accelerates wear.

The Stilwell two-story home had an elevated deck off the second-floor living level — the kind that gets full sun all day and needs staining more frequently than a ground-level structure. Elevated decks in southern Johnson County face southwest, which is the highest UV exposure angle in the KC metro. Southern-exposure cedar can go gray in as few as 18 months without protection. Our wood fence staining teams treat elevated decks on the same cycle as fences — 2 years for south-facing, 3 years for north-facing. Stair tread nosings are touched up at each service regardless of overall deck condition.

The elevated deck went from gray and rough to warm and sealed in one day. The homeowner's back deck is a primary entertaining space in summer — having it look right matters. We left the product spec and re-coat date with the homeowner. Adjacent fence staining or fence stain and seal work can be batched with the next deck visit.
