Deck and Pergola Stain — Spring Hill, KS
Deck and pergola staining in Spring Hill
We pressure-washed the deck boards to remove weathering and surface gray, then treated the raw pergola cedar to remove mill glaze. Both surfaces were brought to the same baseline before staining. Two coats of semi-transparent penetrating amber-cedar stain were applied with consistent technique across deck boards, pergola posts, and overhead beams.
The Spring Hill deck had a pergola added to it two years after original install — which meant the pergola was raw cedar while the deck boards had already started to weather. Matching a new pergola to an existing weathered deck requires stripping the deck back to clean wood before staining, so both surfaces take the same tone.
Matching new cedar to weathered cedar
Spring Hill's open lots get full southern sun exposure — the kind that accelerates stain breakdown. Two surfaces that started at different weathering stages need surface prep before staining so they accept color evenly. This is standard in our fence staining and sealing work on mixed-age projects. Skipping the prep step produces a two-tone result that looks patched rather than restored.
Unified deck and pergola
The two-surface project came out with uniform color across all cedar elements — the homeowner said they couldn't tell which was older. We delivered the stain product spec for future re-coats. For the adjacent cedar board-on-board privacy fence on the same property, the stain schedule was noted on the same maintenance invoice.
